Persian Carpets &: Rugs FAQ's
Questions concerning a rug or carpet? We have the answers for you.
All the area rugs and carpets are hand made or hand knotted. We travel all over the persian rug and carpet producing areas of the world choosing genuine hand made Persian and Oriental rugs to offer for sale on our site.
Are your area rugs and runners one-of-a-kind?
Every hand made rug and carpet is unique. As they are hand made, no two rugs or runners can be exactly the same. Similar designs and styles, in smaller or larger sizes are available, but never exactly the same. Each of the rugs will have a slight variation of color, symbolism and individuality.
What are the materials used for your oriental rugs?
Most of the rugs and carpets have 100% wool pile with either a wool, cotton or goat hair foundation. In some of the finer pieces, a wool pile with silk highlights on a cotton or silk foundation will be used. In truly fine pieces, pure silk both for the pile and the foundation will be used. The material for each of the rugs and runners is clearly displayed in the rug details or rug information page.
What is the condition of the area rugs?
All the new rugs are in excellent condition. They have not been used and have no stains or odors. In some of our older pieces there might be some wear, short pile or repair and will be in very good condition. This in no way detracts from the value. Some of our even older semi antique area rugs will have worn pile, some professional repair and are considered good. All of our rugs have been professionally cleaned and are ready for your home. The condition of each individual rug is clearly stated in its description.
What do you mean by "Abrash" color variation?
"Abrash" is the term used to denote variation in the shade of color. This is more common in tribal oriental rugs and determined by several factors. Tribal rugs take several months to weave and the wool used in part of the rug might be from a different dye lot than the rest of the rug. This is due to the fact that many tribal weavers belong to nomadic groups and do not have access to the same dye lots at all times. In such cases the weaver will improvise and try to get the closest tone possible. Natural dyes also tend to fade and mellow over time giving rise to variations in color. In some instances, the weaver will purposefully use different tones to create an artistic effect.
Are your Persian area rugs and Oriental carpets perfectly symmetrical?
All our rugs are hand woven and not machine made. Minor differences in the detail of the pattern may occur. This does not in any way reflect any imperfection in the quality of the rug. This situation will occur more with tribal pieces than with rugs woven by city weavers. The looms used in the villages and rural areas are mostly horizontal looms, which are often taken apart and reassembled due to their nomadic way of life. Tribal rugs take longer to weave and the variations in climate can also stretch and contract the loom. These conditions make it extremely hard to weave a perfectly symmetrical piece.
Do your images reflect the true colors of your rugs?
We at eCarpetGallerywork hard to visually represent our Persian rugs and Oriental area rugs in their truest form. Our lighting is professionally set up to represent bright daylight. Our close-up images are the best way to judge the actual colors of each rug. There are many types of monitors available and each one represents colors differently. Try looking at the photos of our area rugs on two or three different monitors. If they're the same or very close, you can be confident that you're seeing the colors correctly.
Are your Area Rugs environmentally friendly?
Our Oriental area rugs and Persian carpets are hand woven by traditional craftspersons using natural fibers and natural dyes. The whole process of weaving a hand made rug leaves a very small environmental footprint. Our rugs are transported to us in bulk container by sea, shipped to you by rail or transport, not air freight, and delivered directly to your door, all resulting in least energy required. Not only are our rugs unique, stunning and elegant, they are also eco-friendly. Wool area rugs are one of the top choices when looking for healthy non-toxic alternative to the standard olefin, nylon or any other synthetic carpets. Wool is renewable, odor free, fire resistant, durable, and even air purifying. Wool and cotton are natural materials, readily repairable and ultimately easily biodegradable. Now, that certainly offers you real value for your money!
